Bruce Lucas was bitten by a bull shark on the hand and elbow.
The 47-year-old was surfing at Saltwater point on the mid-north coast Sunday around 3pm when the shark grabbed his left elbow.
The surfer fought with the shark, punching it in the head until it released his elbow.
During the battle the man injured his right hand and fingers.
According to The Daily Telegraph the waters were murky which may have been a contributing factor.
The surfer who lives in nearby in Cundleton is recovering at Manning Base Hospital and reported to be “very stable” .
This is the twentieth shark bite attack of 2015, five of which were fatal.
